Katie Orvin joins BCSD as Public Information Officer

CHARLESTON, SC – Katie Orvin has joined the Berkeley County School District as the Public Information Officer. She is a native of Berkeley County and a 2004 graduate of Timberland High School. In 2008, Katie received her Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from Columbia College and continued her studies at the Charleston School of Law where she was awarded her Juris Doctor in May of 2011. Katie brings with her experience from the nonprofit sector, working previously as a regional and financial stability coordinator with SC Thrive and, most recently, coordinating efforts at the Callen-Lacey Center for Children in Berkeley County. A longtime advocate for children, she has served Berkeley County as a Guardian ad Litem and remains active with the youth at Callen-Lacey Center for Children.

As the Public Information Officer, Katie will manage the flow of information from the district to the media and to the public, and she will serve as the district spokesperson, or secure the appropriate spokesperson, for media inquiries. Assuring compliance with Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Katie will also respond to all FOIA requests.

Katie still calls northern Berkeley County home and is most proud of her two year old daughter, Skarlett Kate. She is excited to return to the district that laid the foundation for her educational success and will work hard to assist Berkeley County School District in achieving continued excellence.
