Keenan High School Student Wins Top State Awards from SC Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics

COLUMBIA, SC – W.J. Keenan High School student Amber Stone was named the top student in the state among the seven school districts participating in Accelerate, the new virtual engineering program taught in conjunction with the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM).
In addition to winning the GSSM Best Overall State award, Amber was named the top Accelerate student at her school site and received commendations for exhibiting self-control, integrity, responsibility, flexibility, innovation, persistence, commitment and initiative. Grades and teamwork were added to determine the best all-around student per Accelerate site, as well as statewide. Amber is the proud daughter of daughter of Kelvin and Fran Stone.
School districts participating in the Accelerate virtual engineering program include Dorchester Two, Greenville County, Horry County, Lexington One, Orangeburg Five, Pickens County and Richland One.
Developed by GSSM, Accelerate students remain in their home high schools throughout the academic year while participating in virtual classes taught by GSSM faculty. During their sophomore and junior years, students participate in virtual courses, Saturday experiences and summer camps. Year three will feature virtual courses and Saturday experiences, plus culminate with industry internships. Through Accelerate’s unique curriculum, students may earn as many as 32 college credits toward an engineering degree.
