Keep Laurens County Beautiful Storm Drain Art Contest

May 2, 2023

Calling all artists!

Keep Laurens County Beautiful is seeking artists to transform up to four storm drains into public works of art.  The goal of the project is to bring awareness to keep our storm drains clear of trash and pollution that ends up in our local streams.

In addition to their artistic value, painted storm drains serve as visual reminders regarding stormwater pollution and the common misconception that our storm drains lead to sewer treatment facilities. In reality, anything that enters a storm drain goes directly into the nearest river, lake, or stream. This includes litter, auto fluids, yard chemicals, pet waste, and other pollutants.

“There is no deadline for the project at this time,” said Courtney Stonell, Laurens County Chamber Beautification Affiliate Coordinator. “We have plans for this to be an ongoing project with the Laurens County Water and Sewer Commission. It’s a great way to educate the community and beautify the storm drains.”

Selected muralists will receive $500 for design and installation. A stipend will be given to each artist to assist with supplies.
