Keep the Midlands Beautiful welcomes New Board Member

April 30, 2013

COLUMBIA, SC – April 30, 2013 – Keep the Midlands Beautiful welcomes Mark Harmon to the Keep the Midlands Beautiful Board of Directors.

In his early days growing up in Gaffney, South Carolina, Mark Harmon divided his time between school, the ball field, and Buford Street United Methodist Church. Those places and the mentors who guided him along the way are the foundation of the man he is today.

After receiving numerous academic and athletic accolades, and upon graduating from Gaffney High School, Mark attended Wofford College on a baseball scholarship, before eventually transferring to Clemson University. In 2001, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Ceramic and Materials Engineering.

Before entering his current profession, Mr. Harmon worked in Charlotte, NC with WEDECO, Inc., as a technical sales engineer for designing and building treatment systems for both potable water and wastewater. Specifically, his focus was integrating ultraviolet disinfection and ozone oxidation of water into the treatment process for health and environmental protection in both industrial and municipal applications.

Following his stint in Charlotte, Mark moved in 2005 to the capital of his home state to begin working in State Government. In 2011, Mark accepted the position of Executive Director with the SC Senate Republican Caucus.

Over the years, Mr. Harmon has gained a reputation as someone who can be counted on for the quality of his work, and despite the inherently political nature of his position, he has developed exceptional working relationships across the aisle.

For all he invests in his work, Mark feels his most impressive accomplishment is his very recent marriage to Ms. Elizabeth Powers, of Columbia. The couple, married on April 6, 2013, will make their home in Forest Acres.

“I am so pleased that Mark has joined the already dedicated individuals we have advancing our mission in the Midlands” said Jacqueline Buck, Executive Director of Keep the Midlands Beautiful.

Established in 1989 to serve Richland and Lexington Counties, Keep the Midlands Beautiful mission is to engage, inspire and educate the Midlands to invest in our community through litter prevention, recycling and beautification.
