Kevin Guskiewicz to remain at Michigan State, leaving Clemson president search unresolved

July 7, 2026

The search for the next president of Clemson University has reopened after the university announced that its previously selected candidate has decided to remain at his current institution.

In a statement released Monday, the Clemson University Board of Trustees said it was notified on July 6 that Kevin Guskiewicz had chosen to remain at Michigan State University for personal reasons.

“The national search had a robust pool of candidates, and the Board will be meeting soon to determine next steps,” the university said.

Guskiewicz was unanimously selected by the Board of Trustees in May following a national search to become Clemson’s 16th president in the university’s 136-year history and only its second presidential transition in the past 27 years.

Before moving to Michigan in March 2024, Guskiewicz was chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for five years.
