Kids Teeth collecting School supplies for Hootie & The Blowfish Homegrown Roundup

July 14, 2016

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC – Rock band Hootie & The Blowfish has become synonymous with helping kids in the Lowcountry get ready to head back to the classroom. But beyond the notebooks and pens, children have other needs to ensure a successful school year.

That’s where Mount Pleasant pediatric dental office Kids Teeth steps in to offer free dental exams as part of the Hootie & The Blowfish Homegrown Roundup on Aug. 6. Kids Teeth has been volunteering its dental services since the band started its concert on Daniel Island and corresponding school supply drive a decade ago.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of this event, Kids Teeth is taking its efforts a step further and hosting a school supply drive at its office. Those donations will be part of Hootie’s Homegrown Roundup, which provides essential services such as haircuts and dental exams as well as back-to-school supplies for more than 1,600 local students.

Drop off the following items at either of Kids Teeth Mount Pleasant locations through Aug. 1:

  • Pencils
  • Rulers
  • Paper
  • Folders
  • Spiral notebooks
  • Composition notebooks
  • Crayons
  • Markers
  • Scissors
  • Erasers
  • Glue sticks

Anyone can drop off items during regular business hours; donation boxes will be in the lobby at 1073 Johnnie Dodds Blvd. and at 1130 Professional Lane in Park West. For every item collected, Kids Teeth will match the donation.

“We are excited about the opportunity to participate in the Hootie Homegrown Roundup again this year,” said Dr. Mike Myers. “Gathering much-needed school supplies and providing dental screenings help ensure a good start to the school year for many underprivileged children in Charleston County.”

The 10th annual Hootie & The Blowfish Homegrown Roundup is noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6 at Burke High School Auditorium, 244 President St. in Charleston. Hootie & The Blowfish band members Darius Rucker, Mark Bryan, James “Soni” Sonefeld and Dean Felber attend the event, helping a dozen Charleston County elementary schools.

The best thing about the Hootie Homegrown Roundup is the how appreciative the kids and parents are,” said Kids Teeth office manager Belinda Wierschem. “I love seeing their smiling faces. When we started, it was in a small elementary school cafeteria in Hollywood and now they fill the gym at Burke High School.”
