K&L Gates’ Charleston office launches law student diversity recruiting program

May 21, 2019

The Charleston office of global law firm K&L Gates LLP has launched its first client partnership diversity recruiting program. The program, entitled, “K&L Gates: The Power of Partnership,” offers a first-year law school student a unique opportunity to experience legal work in both a firm and global company in-house setting. Students selected for the program spend the first six weeks working in a K&L Gates office and the remaining four weeks working in-house with the legal team of a global corporation. For the inaugural year of the Charleston office’s program, K&L Gates is partnering with Charleston-headquartered Blackbaud, Inc. this summer to host Asia Cadet, a law student at the University of Virginia School of Law.

A Karsh-Dillard Scholar and member of the Black Law Students Association and Virginia Law Women at the University of Virginia School of Law, Asia holds a B.A. in Political Science and Criminology (magna cum laude) from the University of Miami, where she was president of the University of Miami Haitian Student Organization and a teaching assistant to adjunct professor Judge Ellen Venzer.

This client partnership program falls under the auspices of K&L Gates’ national Power of Partnership recruiting program. The firm has established this national diversity recruiting and development program to partner with its clients to build a pipeline of diverse candidates for K&L Gates and the profession of law.  K&L Gates shares the values of diversity with our clients and are proud to partner with them as the firm endeavors to create a more inclusive work force.  The Charleston office is the third K&L Gates office to participate in the firm’s overall national initiative, with the firm already partnering with clients in Seattle and Washington D.C. It is expected that additional K&L Gates offices will announce client partnership programs in the coming year.
