Labor veteran joins Callison Tighe as an associate

November 14, 2012

COLUMBIA, SC November 14, 2012 – Brian Lysell, a 2012 University of South Carolina School of Law graduate, has joined Callison Tighe & Robinson as an associate.

Though he’s new to the practice of law, Lysell is long on professional experience. For more than a decade, he worked with UNITE-HERE, Local 6 and the New York Hotel Trades Council, the labor unions representing over 30,000 hotel workers in New York and northern New Jersey. In his positions as grievance officer, business representative and vice president of Local 6, and as special assistant to the president of the Trades Council, Lysell represented workers on the shop floor, in mediation, and at arbitration, negotiated with employers at the bargaining table, and helped employees recover millions of dollars in unpaid wages, gratuities and benefit fund payments.

He came to South Carolina in 2008 and founded Dreigroschen Operations, a company that assisted labor unions in assessing the financial and workload impact of employer proposals and in improving the administration of their collective bargaining agreements.

He holds bachelor’s degrees in German and comparative literature from The Pennsylvania State University. While in law school, he earned many honors, including a Peggy Browning Fellowship, the Knox Haynsworth Scholarship for excellence in labor & employment law, and the James Petigru Compleat Lawyer Award, Bronze Medallion, which goes annually to three University of South Carolina graduating law students who show the potential to be outstanding attorneys. He was editor-in-chief of the ABA Real Property, Trust & Estate Law Journal, as well as board president of the USC School of Law Pro Bono Program. He won CALI Awards, which recognize the top-scoring law students in each class, in contracts, legal research, and alternative dispute resolution.

At Callison Tighe, his practice will concentrate on labor law and employment law.
