For most of us getting dressed during July and August is all about finding the least amount we can wear that is still presentable, but style aficionados know this is the biggest fashion mistake we can make.

Summer style begins and ends with the accessories and the small details you add to your outfit.  Summer clothes tend to be ubiquitous.  Everyone from teenagers to grandparents can throw on a maxi dress or basic white t-shirt and jeans.  How you style it, i.e. the accessories you choose, it what keeps your look age appropriate and unique so you stand apart from everyone else.

Here are some of my favorite summer accessories that will work with any outfit in your summer wardrobe:

1.  Earrings.  Don’t be afraid to break out the crystal statement earrings.  They quickly and easily dress up a t-shirt and shorts.  Plus you don’t need any other big pieces since they are the main accessory item.

2.  Necklaces.  Layered necklaces are a great way to add a lot of visual weight to your top without the actual weight of extra fabric and embellishments.  This makes them perfect for hot weather.

Guys feel free to thrown on a necklace as well.  With swimsuits or peeking out from under your opened collar, longer pendant necklaces are a great way to focus attention to that chest you’ve been working hard to build up all year.

3.  Bracelets.  From stacked bangles to statement cuffs and everything in between bracelets are the best way to dress up a bare arm.

4.  Hats.  Not only do they protect your face from the sun, hats give your outfit that finishing touch of a third piece.  Since they do trap body heat, you want to make sure the hat is unlined, lightweight and breathable.

5.  Bags.  Clutch bags are not just for evenings anymore.  From larger envelope to embellished boxes, clutches were a huge part of this runway shows for both men and women.  Another option is the backpack, just not the JanSport ones from your youth.  Add color, texture and playfulness to your outfit without weighing down your shoulders or forearm.

6.  Shoes.  We all love a statement shoe and know they can make or break your outfit.  Fortunately there are now statement shoes in every style; from espadrilles and loafers to heels and oxfords you can find the perfect shoe to fit your need and occasion that is also fun.

During the winter it is easier to be a little sloppier because you can just hide it under another layer, but not in the summer.  Wearing less means everything you wear matters.
