Laurens County Cancer Association to host “Living with Cancer” meeting Thursday

The Laurens County Cancer Association will hold its August “Living with Cancer” meeting on Thursday, Aug. 13, at 5 p.m. at 1337 Medical Ridge Road in Clinton. The gathering is open to the public, and dinner will be served.
This month’s program features India Jones, a doctoral occupational therapy student in the Presbyterian College Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program. Jones will share information about her capstone project, which examines the role of occupational therapy in addressing unmet needs and improving quality of life for cancer caregivers.
Occupational therapy helps people engage in the daily activities that support health and well-being. Jones’ research focuses on informal caregivers, the family members, partners and friends who provide unpaid care for someone with cancer. Those caregivers often take on multiple responsibilities while receiving little support for their own needs.
As part of the project, Jones is inviting caregivers to complete a survey identifying the unmet needs and daily challenges they face. Participants must be 18 or older, must currently care for or have previously cared for someone with cancer, and must have served in an informal, unpaid caregiver role. The survey is available by QR code on the study flyer. Questions about the study may be directed to Dr. Courtney Addison at [email protected].
Also on the program is Carolyn Robinson of VIA Hospice Care, who will speak about her experience as a caregiver both professionally and personally.
“Caregivers give so much of themselves, and too often they are the ones who go without support,” said Anna Miller, executive director of the Laurens County Cancer Association. “These meetings give patients, survivors and caregivers a place to be honest about what they are walking through and to find out what help is available right here at home. We hope everyone will come, share a meal and know they are not walking this road alone.”
The meal will include pulled pork sandwiches, chips and baked beans.
