Laurens County Museum Celebrates Black History Month with Historic Music
February 18, 2025“A Musical Visit to Days of Old” will showcase Negro Spirituals, Common Meter Music, Slavery Hymns and more on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at 3:00 pm, at the Laurens County Museum. Harold Ligon, Laurel Hill Baptist Church, and Smyrna AME Church will bring the songs, hymns, and music to resonate throughout the museum for visitors to experience. The museum is located at 116 South Public Square, Laurens, SC. The program is free and open to the public.
The genre of religious songs created by African Americans during the slavery era in the United States is referred to as “Negro Spirituals”. The songs often feature themes of hope, freedom, and reliance on God. “Common meter music” describes a specific hymn-like poetic form often used in spirituals and slavery hymns which were connected to the experience of enslavement. All will be performed by singers that day.
This will be a special afternoon at the museum. The new exhibit, “The Road to Education for Black Americans“ will be open and highlights important dates in public education in the United States, South Carolina, and Laurens County.
The exhibit hall is regularly open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. For more information about museum memberships, sponsorships, volunteering, or programs, call (864) 681-3678 or visit LaurensCountyMuseum.org or Facebook.
