Laurens County Museum Continues Revolutionary War Series with Battle of Cowpens Lecture
May 11, 2026The Laurens County Museum will host the next installment of its Revolutionary War Battle Series on Tuesday, May 12, at 7 p.m. in The Magnolia Room at 116 S. Public Square in Laurens.
Historian and battlefield preservationist Durant Ashmore returns to the museum to present a lecture on the Battle of Cowpens. A frequent and familiar speaker at the museum, Ashmore has spent years uncovering and preserving the Revolutionary War history of Laurens County, a region he describes as having played a crucial role in America’s fight for independence.
The Battle of Cowpens, fought January 17, 1781, is widely regarded as one of the most brilliant Patriot victories of the war. Laurens County’s connection to the battle runs deep, as the Patriot victory at Hammond’s Old Store, fought just 18 days earlier near what is now Clinton, helped energize local militia and set the stage for the Cowpens triumph.
As the nation prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence, Ashmore’s lecture series offers Laurens County residents a timely opportunity to connect with the history fought and bled for in their own backyard.
The event is free for museum members, with a suggested donation of $5 for non-members. For those unable to attend in person, the lecture will be livestreamed on the museum’s Facebook page and posted to its YouTube channel the following day.
