January 23, 2024

There has been talk about this for a few weeks but now it is official.

The Laurens School District 55 Board of Trustees unanimously approved the hiring of Greg Porter from Greenville as the new head football coach. Porter takes over from Daryl Smith, who was dismissed after a 2-9 season.

Porter, with a five-season stint at Greenville, boasts a record of 45-15, winning 10 games in four of those seasons. His teams reached the 4A upper state final in the past three seasons, marking the program’s deepest postseason runs in almost a century.

Previously, Porter led Hillcrest from 2010 to 2018, achieving a 72-44 record, including a Big 16 state title in 2014 and three upper state semi-final appearances. His coaching career began with a two-year term at Southside High School.

The Laurens District High School community looks forward to Porter’s leadership and anticipates a positive impact on the football program. With a history of success and a reputation for postseason achievements, Porter brings valuable experience to guide the team in the upcoming season.
