Law enforcement officers rappel 20-story building

Every day law enforcement officers protect our citizens and advocate to help the less fortunate. Now, a special team of officers and supporters is going to rappel 326 feet down The Hub on Main Street to bring awareness to people facing hunger. Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews, and Bruce Brutschy, Past President of the Columbia Citizens Police Academy, are rappelling in Harvest Hope Food Bank’s Over The Edge To End Hunger on Friday, June 10 in Columbia.
“Participating in an event like this takes you out of your comfort zone and ultimately changes your life – just like Harvest Hope is trying to change the lives of people who are hungry,” said Jim Matthews, Sheriff of Kershaw County. “I hope our participation will encourage others to get involved in Over The Edge. All donations benefit Harvest Hope’s efforts and are tax-deductible.”
“You don’t have to be law enforcement official to participate. Anyone can sign up to go Over The Edge,” said Debbie Summers, Harvest Hope Donor Relations Manager in Columbia. “All you need is a sense of adventure and a commitment to raising funds for Harvest Hope Food Bank.”
In addition to VIPs, such as the team of officers, rappelling to build awareness on Friday, citizens are invited to rappel on Saturday, June 11. Participants for Saturday’s event have to raise $1,000 for the opportunity to go Over the Edge of The Hub, the second tallest building in Columbia.
“If you don’t want to rappel, there are other ways you can help,” said Summers. “Individuals can make a donation in honor of any VIP or any person who is rappelling on Saturday. Also, companies can help with sponsorships for an employee, a veteran, a public safety officer, Special Olympics athlete, etc. This “bucket list” opportunity would also make a wonderful birthday or graduation gift!”
VIPs will rappel on Friday, June 10 while Harvest Hope expects 70 people to rappel on Saturday, June 11. The event will go from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information and to register, please visit harvesthopeovertheedge.com.
