Leadership Georgetown Class 33 completes project to support Georgetown County school nurses
May 31, 2026Leadership Georgetown County Class 33 has completed a community service project that raised more than $9,000 and collected 30,258 items to restock and renovate a supply closet for Georgetown County school nurses, giving them added resources to care for students across the district.
Class members said the effort began in October as they discussed their annual class project and learned that a previous grant from International Paper had helped supply the closet at the Howard Adult Education Center. After the paper mill closed, that funding source disappeared, leaving school nurses to cover some basic needs themselves.
The need was significant. From August through April, school nurses across Georgetown County recorded more than 60,000 student visits, and district officials estimated another 6,000 visits would take place before the end of the school year. Nurses also manage between 50 and 100 chronic health conditions at each school, including asthma, diabetes and severe allergies.
When class members visited the former supply closet, they found worn flooring, damaged shelving and limited room for training equipment. They also learned that many nurses were using their own money to buy items such as hygiene products, clothing and other essentials for students.
To meet those needs, the class organized supply drives at Food Lion in Litchfield Village Market and Walmart in Georgetown, created an Amazon wish list for online donations and held local fundraising efforts. The money raised supported both renovations and the purchase of medical-grade thermometers for schools.
Working with Georgetown County School District, class members replaced worn wooden shelving with freestanding metal units, installed new tile flooring and helped improve the space so it can serve as both a storage area and a training site for nurses. They also created a perpetual plaque recognizing donors who supported the project.
The class also received donated supplies and merchandise from local orthodontists, pediatricians and other businesses. Those contributions included hygiene products, first-aid items, clothing and storage bags, helping stock the closet ahead of the next school year.
In all, Leadership Georgetown County Class 33 raised more than $9,000 in cash donations and collected 30,258 individual items for the closet.
About half of the money raised covered renovation costs, while the remaining funds are earmarked to buy medical-grade thermometers for schools, extending the project’s impact beyond the supply closet itself.
