Leadership SC Launches its Hunger Never Takes a Break Campaign on March 19

March 16, 2009

COLUMBIA, SC – March 16, 2009 – The 2009 Class of Leadership South Carolina will launch its Hunger Never Takes a Break Campaign on March 19 to raise funds for the state’s four regional food banks. This campaign is a call to action for monetary donations that will help feed more than 13 percent of the state’s population that lives in poverty.

The goal of the Hunger Never Takes A Break campaign is to raise $100,000 by June 1, 2009, to restock the state’s food banks during spring break and summer break.

Food banks are experiencing unprecedented demand because of the declining economy; however, in the midst of this growing crisis, there are times when the food supply is more critical than others. When schools are closed for holidays and vacations, families experience difficulty meeting food needs because children do not receive a free or subsidized breakfast and lunch. For many children, the meals served in school are the only meals they can rely upon.

“We are asking for monetary donations rather than food donations so that the food banks can take advantage of their ability to purchase food in bulk at substantial discounts,” said Diane Howard, member of the Leadership South Carolina Class of 2009.  To kick off the campaign, class members from across the state will volunteer 10:00a.m. – 2:00p.m. on March 19 at the Harvest Hope Food Bank in Columbia.  (The Media are invited to attend at 12:00 noon.)

Individual and corporate gifts are encouraged. To make a donation, mail a check to the South Carolina Food Bank Association (SCFBA) at P.O. Box 451, Columbia, SC 29202, visit their Website at www.scfoodbankassociation.org, or you may stop by any food bank location.  For more information about Leadership South Carolina visit: www.leadershipsouthcarolina.net or call (803) 788-5700 ext. 35.
