League of Women Voters turns 103 and the VOTE411 website provides voting information for Columbia City Council Special Election

February 24, 2023

The League of Women Voters of the Columbia Area celebrates its 103rd Anniversary. The League of Women Voters was founded on February 14, 1920, following the ratification of the 19th Amendment in August 1919, giving women the right to vote in the United States. Although African American women were included in the women’s suffrage movement during the early 1900s, many were not able to vote until the 1960s. The suffragists fought to help women exercise and protect their new rights granted by the 19th Amendment. The League of Women Voters remains a strong and vibrant organization at the national, state, and local levels across the country.

In her remarks on the occasion of the 103rd Anniversary of the League of Women Voters, Dr. Deborah Turner, President of the League of Women Voters of the United States shared, “The mission of the League of Women Voters is to empower voters and defend democracy…. We work every day to protect and expand voting rights to make the promise of democracy real for everyone… We have the power to make our country a better place for all.”

Members of the League of Women Voters of the Columbia Area have been actively involved in voter registration activities, attending local municipal and school board meetings, sponsoring candidate forums, and managing the League’s local VOTE411 website.
