LEC Pay It Forward Program: Angel Caughorn Supports Joanna Fire Department

January 27, 2025

Angel Caughorn, Member Service Representative at Laurens Electric Cooperative, paid forward $500 to the Joanna Fire Department as part of the cooperative’s employee Pay It Forward program.

Founded in 1966, the Joanna Fire Department operates with 32 dedicated volunteers who respond to a variety of emergencies, including fires, road accidents, and floods. The funds from Angel’s donation will be used to purchase essential personal protective equipment and gear, such as gloves and helmets.

Angel, a Joanna resident, shared her motivation for the donation, saying, “It’s a small town, and I know many of the volunteers. I see what they do for this community, and I wanted to give back.”

Volunteer firefighting requires significant commitment and training. According to the South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association, “Becoming a volunteer is a serious commitment. A new recruit without any training can expect to spend 200-300 hours their first year going through the process, initial training, events, and more.”

About the Pay It Forward Program
The Pay It Forward program, launched in 2015 by Laurens Electric Cooperative, provides a monthly opportunity for employees to give back to their communities. Each month, a Laurens Electric employee is randomly selected to receive $500 to pay forward in any way they choose. The funds are made possible through charity events organized by employee volunteers, ensuring the initiative remains budget-neutral.

Angel’s thoughtful act is another example of the profound impact this program has on communities throughout Laurens County.
