The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society announces Robert “Rob” R. Smith II as candidate for Man of the Year

February 14, 2017

The Midlands Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is pleased to announce that Robert “Rob” R. Smith II has been nominated as a candidate for LLS’s 2017 Man of the Year. Candidates across the country compete in honor of a local boy or girl who is a blood cancer survivor, to raise the most funds for blood cancer research.

Smith, an attorney at Moore & Van Allen, is one of an elite group of community and business leaders who will compete for the titles of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Man & Woman of the Year. Competing for these titles is an honor surrounded with a great deal of fanfare, including a full-page ad in USA Today. However, the most important reason candidates participate is to find cures for blood cancers and ensure that patients have access to lifesaving treatments. Smith was inspired to compete for Man of the Year by one of his colleagues, a cancer survivor who encouraged him to get involved with the campaign.

As a candidate, Smith will raise funds for a world without blood cancers between March 7th and May 18th, 2017. Every dollar he raises will count as one “vote” in his favor. The male and female candidates with the most “votes” will be awarded the titles Midlands Man & Woman of the Year at a Grand Finale on May 18th at the SC State Museum. The local winners are then entered into the competition for National Man & Woman of the Year titles.

“The Man & Woman of the Year program is a great way for candidates to partner with other influential people in their communities to bring hope to thousands of blood cancer patients,” said South Carolina Executive Director Paul Jeter. “Candidates get to showcase their fundraising and community outreach skills as well as their humanitarianism.”

There are many ways you can support Smith in his quest for a world without blood cancers. Become a member of his campaign team, sponsor the Grand Finale on May 18th or simply pledge to make a donation during his campaign.
