Lexington District One Board approves renaming of Lexington Middle School

March 17, 2021

During their March 16, 2021, meeting, the Lexington County School District One Board of Trustees approved the renaming of the new school under construction on Old Cherokee Road.

The new school, a replacement for Lexington Middle School, will become Lakeside Middle School. The new building allows students to remain under one roof and not spread across multiple buildings. The new site provides a safer campus with adequate stacking of vehicles for student drop-off and pick-up, and increased building capacity to accommodate future growth.

Lexington Middle Principal Casey Calhoun said they collected feedback from students, families, community members and staff during the renaming process. A majority of current students, families and staff supported rebranding the new school.

Calhoun said the new name ensures the school remains known as LMS, but better reflects the school’s vision and population.

“Lexington Middle is no longer a feeder school to Lexington High School,” said Calhoun. “We will be less than a mile from Lake Murray, so this name is fitting. Our students will become River Bluff Gators, not LHS Wildcats, and the name Lakeside Middle School provides a connection to our past as we remain LMS, but continue to honor the future.”

In the coming months, students, staff and families will also get an opportunity to provide input on the school’s new mascot.
