Doctor Will Practice at Lexington Brain and Spine Institute

 

WEST COLUMBIA, SC – Lexington Medical Center is pleased to welcome W. Randal Westerkam, MD, FAAPMR, RMSK, to its network of care. Dr. Westerkam joins the board-certified physicians at Lexington Brain and Spine Institute as a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, or physiatrist.

Dr. Westerkam will treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons. By thoroughly evaluating patients’ conditions, needs and expectations, Dr. Westerkam is able to create treatment plans that improve their quality of life without surgery.

A physiatrist can help people with persistent pain or limited function as a result of an accident, injury or chronic condition; people considering surgery or those recovering from it; anyone with an illness or treatment for an illness that has diminished his or her energy or ability to move easily; patients recovering from the effects of a stroke or other problems related to nerve damage; and people with chronic pain from arthritis, a repetitive stress injury or back problems.

Board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation with additional certification in sports medicine and American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography certification in musculoskeletal sonography, Dr. Westerkam is an American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Fellow and a National Board of Medical Examiners Diplomate. With nearly 20 years of experience in private practice, he most recently worked in Columbia and served as an assistant professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.

Dr. Westerkam graduated cum laude from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina with a Bachelor of Science in psychology and earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. After his internship at University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill, Dr. Westerkam completed a physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He also served as chief resident.
