Lexington One Educational Foundation $33,016 Mathematics Grant to benefit all K-2 students in districtMay 22, 2023
The Lexington One Educational Foundation has awarded a $33,016 Counting Collections for Mathematics Grant to Lexington District One Instructional Services, which will benefit all kindergarten through second grade students in Lexington District One.
The goal of the Counting Collections for Mathematics project is to improve the counting ability of students at an early age. The initiative will provide students with a foundation in counting that will give them the confidence and flexibility they need to strengthen their counting skills, so that they can move from counting by ones to counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s, as this skill is required in the South Carolina College and Career-Ready Standards for Mathematics.
This grant project will impact approximately 315 K-2 teachers in Lexington District One’s 17 elementary schools and almost 6,000 K-2 students. Teachers will be provided with books and materials to enhance their professional knowledge and implement instructional practices. Materials provided will be used to create counting buckets that the teachers can use to assess students’ counting abilities and increase their counting skills in a fun and engaging way.
Lexington District One’s Mathematics Coordinator Hilary Morgan stated, “Lisa Ross and I are extremely appreciative to the Lexington One Educational Foundation for this significant grant that will benefit our youngest mathematicians in Lexington District One. Foundational counting principles are critically important for our youngest students to master prior to moving onto the upper grades. This grant will provide our K-2 students with a solid foundation in counting to ensure their future success in mathematics.”
Lexington One Educational Foundation Executive Director Julie Anderson Washburn shared, “The Foundation has consistently supported reading literacy in Lexington District One, so it’s wonderful for our Board of Directors to also offer such significant financial support to strengthen mathematical literacy in our youngest students in Lexington District One. We are thrilled to be able to offer this grant, which was made possible thanks to generous donors who support our mission of serving Lexington District One.”
