Lexington One Educational Foundation’s $76,788 in Helping Hands Grants benefits all Lexington District One schools

February 8, 2021

In light of the continued COVID-19 pandemic and the increasing needs of our families, the Lexington County School District One Educational Foundation Board of Directors recently awarded a total of $76,788 in Helping Hands Grants for Schools! Accordingly, each Lexington District One school received one of these grants, all of which were made possible by the Educational Foundation’s LEAP Emergency Fund.

School leaders are using these Helping Hands Grants primarily to assist students with emergency needs, and secondly to help employees in crisis. Thus far the funds have helped Lexington One families in need by providing food, paying utility bills for parents who have a temporary job loss due to COVID-19, and provided winter clothing for students whose families were financially struggling to survive.

Foundation Executive Director Julie Anderson Washburn stated, “The Lexington One Educational Foundation staff have seen a dramatic increase in the number of families needing temporary financial help due to the continued coronavirus pandemic. We work closely with our Lexington District One administrators, social workers and volunteer LEAP representatives to identify and assist these families in crisis. Our Helping Hands Grants are a wonderful example of one the ways that the Educational Foundation supports Lexington School District One and our Lexington community.”

Upon learning of the grant awards, Pleasant Hill Elementary Principal Margaret B. Mitchum shared with Mrs. Washburn, “This is so wonderful! Thank you so much! We are so glad to be able to help families in need this year, as our families really do need assistance. Thank you and the Educational Foundation for making funds available so we can help our families.”
