Lexington student receives presidential honor for community service

LEXINGTON, SC – Awards from the President of the United States don’t come along every day, but Paul Kim can now display his award proudly.
A student at Lexington High, who also takes courses at Lexington Technology Center in Lexington County School District One, Kim recently received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for dedicating his time to serve his local community. For completing 104 service hours, Kim received the Gold Level President’s Volunteer Service Award.
The President’s Volunteer Service Award falls under the Corporation for National and Community Service and partners with Points of Light, the largest organization in the world for volunteer service.
Individuals must partner with a certified organization and contribute hours of service, not monetary donations, to receive the award. Kim completed his service hours through the Lexington Technology Center’s HOSA program, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America.
“The time Paul has invested in our community with the work he has put into brightening other people’s lives, not to mention his own career path, is phenomenal,” LTC Director Bryan Hearn said. “Paul is a great ambassador for service learning and the Lexington Technology Center.”
Kim chose to volunteer at an extended care center for senior citizens, assisting CNAs with daily tasks and activities for the residents. In addition, he played his violin every weekend for the Alzheimer’s unit.
