Local Craftsman Robert Folk Creates Handcrafted Wooden Flags Inspired by Patriotism and Family Legacy
November 6, 2024Robert Folk, a Kinards resident and self-taught woodworker, has been crafting wooden flags since 2015. His journey into woodworking began with creating raised dog bowls and various items for his wife Tammy’s grooming shop, but it was the desire to try something new that led him to focus on patriotic flags.
“I have enjoyed woodworking for as long as I can remember,” Folk shared. “My grandfather and father were both woodworkers, so it’s in my blood. Being a retired law enforcement officer with a love for my country, building flags just made sense.”
Since then, Folk has crafted over 100 wooden flags, each piece meticulously handmade and a reflection of his dedication to both craftsmanship and patriotism. His flags have traveled beyond local borders, with one even making its way to Japan. “We met some people during the solar eclipse festival in Newberry a few years ago, and I ended up selling a flag that went all the way to Japan,” Folk recalled.
In addition to the wooden flags, Folk creates bird feeders, cutting boards, raised dog bowls, and even furniture. Though much of his work is sold through word of mouth, Folk has gained a following on Facebook under the name Old Rustic Relics, where customers can view and request his creations. His wife Tammy helps manage orders through their Facebook page, and he also takes custom requests via phone.
For those interested in owning one of Folk’s unique, handcrafted pieces, he can be reached at 803-587-0035, where he gladly accepts custom flag orders and other woodworking projects.
Though born in Newberry, Folk spent part of his childhood in Denmark, SC, before returning to his hometown after the passing of his father, Chris Folk. Now settled in Kinards, he continues to pour his love for country and craftsmanship into every flag he builds.
“I have a passion for helping people,” Folk added. “It’s a great feeling to see the look on someone’s face when they receive one of my flags.”
Through his work, Robert Folk brings both artistry and patriotism to life, one handcrafted flag at a time, with his pieces touching hearts not only locally but around the world.
