Local Horse encounter program offers free equine sessions for foster families of children with special needs

A new community outreach initiative is opening barn doors to local foster families caring for children with special needs, offering them an opportunity to experience the therapeutic benefits of horses free of charge.

Organized by area resident Rachel Middleton, the “Free Horse Encounter” program welcomes foster and kinship care families who are looking after children with developmental or special needs of all ages. Designed as an inclusive, safe, and calming environment, the sessions aim to build connection, foster confidence, and provide a welcoming sense of belonging for children who may face unique physical, emotional, or sensory challenges.

The initiative stems directly from Middleton’s personal perspective as the mother of a nonverbal son with autism. Drawing on that lived experience, she created the program to ensure families navigating similar caregiving paths have accessible, low-pressure access to equine-assisted connection.

During the visits, children have the opportunity to safely interact with gentle horses, learn basic handling and grooming techniques, and spend time in a relaxing farm setting tailored to their comfort levels.

Because scheduling and barn availability are limited, sessions will be arranged on a first-come, first-served basis, with a potential waitlist if interest exceeds capacity.
