Local Northwestern Mutual Financial Advisor awarded $15,000 grant to benefit Greenville County Foster Parent Association

May 11, 2022

Each year, Northwestern Mutual, a leading financial services company, recognizes the leadership of its financial advisors who are making a difference in their own communities through exemplary volunteerism. As part of these efforts, the company, through its Foundation, is awarding $310,000 in grants to nonprofits nationwide through its 2022 Community Service Awards.

This year’s program recognizes 17 of the company’s financial advisors for their commitment to positively impacting their communities through dedicated volunteer service. Each winner has been awarded a grant to benefit a local nonprofit he or she is involved with. Greenville resident Joseph Funderburk, a financial advisor at Northwestern Mutual – Greenville, has been named a 2022 Community Service Award winner, receiving a $15,000 grant for the Greenville County Foster Parent Association.

“Making a positive impact in the community is what our advisors do every day while they serve their clients. Their passion for giving back is demonstrated by their dedication to incredible causes that are making a real difference in their own backyards,” said Steve Radke, president, Northwestern Mutual Foundation. “At Northwestern Mutual, we’re proud to have a network of advisors who are committed to bettering the lives of those around them.”

The Greenville County Foster Parent Association’s (GCFPA) mission is to educate, support, advocate and bring awareness to the Greenville County foster care community by training, providing resources and offering programming to foster families. After fostering two children and experiencing the support of GCFPA firsthand, Funderburk decided he wanted to give back by ensuring foster families have the tools and resources they need to succeed. As vice president of the board of GCFPA, Funderburk is committed to helping the organization fulfill its role and mission to support foster parents for years to come. The grant will support the organization’s annual Holiday Gift Campaign by providing Christmas gifts for more than 650 foster children in need.

“The training and resources of GCFPA helped me to successfully foster two children, which changed me for the better,” said Funderburk. “The number of children under the protection of the South Carolina Department of Social Services has climbed substantially in the past ten years. With an investment of time, energy, love and guidance, foster parents can make a positive difference in the lives of the children and families in need.”

The company has donated more than $6.6 million to nonprofits nationwide through the Community Service Awards program since the program’s inception in 1995. The 2022 winners will present their grants to their nonprofits throughout the country this spring.
