Local Sensation SounZ Familiar Returns to Newberry Opera House’s Spotlight

August 14, 2023

SounZ Familiar, a vibrant 6-piece band hailing from Laurens County, is gearing up for their second performance in a little over a year at the renowned Newberry Opera House. Following their successful debut in August 2022, the band is set to captivate the audience once more on Friday, August 18th.

The band’s initial appearance at the Newberry Opera House was a testament to the power of musical camaraderie and collaboration. Steve Windsor, who not only operates as the Front of House Audio Engineer but also boasts a history as a former SounZ Familiar band member and sound specialist, played a pivotal role in inviting the band to kick off the 2022/23 season. The success of that inaugural show paved the way for their eagerly awaited encore.

SounZ Familiar’s upcoming performance promises a trip down memory lane as they take on songs from the golden era of rock and roll, featuring hits from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. This tribute to legendary groups and artists that left an indelible mark on the music landscape is a reflection of the band’s deep-seated influences and their passion for the sounds that shaped their musical journey.

The roots of SounZ Familiar trace back to early 2022, when the current lineup solidified. Comprising six talented individuals, each contributing their unique flair to the ensemble:

  • Sandi Ballew Jacks: Lead Vocals, Percussions
  • Billy Summer: Lead Vocals, Electric & Acoustic Guitar, Harmonica
  • Steve (Jethro) Pugh: Lead Vocals, Guitar, Guitar Synthesizer
  • Reese Young: Drums, Percussions
  • Jamie Clark: Lead Vocals, Bass
  • John Czerwinski: Lead Vocals, Keyboard

The synergy between Sandi and Billy dates back to the year 2000 when they first graced the stage together. While Sandi, currently residing in Irmo, grew up in Clinton, Billy’s roots are in Joanna. The formation of SounZ Familiar’s core trio took place in 2018, as they joined forces with Steve Pugh, who made his way to Joanna from Columbus, GA. The original acoustic act eventually evolved into a full-fledged band, allowing them to explore a diverse range of musical genres.

Completing the lineup are Reese Young from Clinton, Jamie Clark from Anderson with Charleston origins, and John, who currently resides in Irmo but originally hails from Chicago, Illinois. Their expansive repertoire spans four decades, encompassing iconic artists such as the Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Allman Brothers, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Linda Ronstadt, Elton John, America, the Beatles, and many more. A hallmark of their performances lies in the seamless integration of four-part vocal harmonies with the beloved music that has carved a unique niche for them in the live music scene.

As SounZ Familiar takes the stage once again at the Newberry Opera House, concertgoers can anticipate a captivating journey through the timeless tunes that have left an indelible mark on generations past and present. The band’s dedication to their craft and their ability to infuse each performance with an authentic and infectious energy ensure that their music resonates deeply with audiences, bridging the gap between eras and fostering a shared musical appreciation.
