Local students honored in Georgetown County 250 Essay Contest

Georgetown County is pleased to announce the winners of the Georgetown County 250 Essay Contest, honoring local students who reflected on the prompt: “What do you hope has changed or stayed the same by 2076?”
First place was awarded to Mikalyn Holmes, with Bevan Grant and Cindy Manzo Vazquez tying for second. Looking ahead 50 years, Mikalyn wants to see reforms in

immigration and cyberbullying accountability alongside lasting community resilience. Bevan advocates for true equality for all Americans while preserving founding ideals of liberty. Meanwhile, Cindy hopes for advancements in recycling and traffic reduction while maintaining key safety regulations and the current education system.
Each winner received a certificate and cash prize during a brief ceremony held today at the Georgetown Library Auditorium, where Mikalyn read her winning essay aloud. All three winning essays will be sealed inside Georgetown County’s new time capsule, set to be opened in 2076 as part of the county’s America 250th anniversary celebration.
Prizes were sponsored by the Georgetown County 250 Committee and the Friends of the Georgetown County Library.
