Lourie Center celebrates National Senior Center Month

Each September, the Lourie Center National celebrates National Senior Center Month, and recognizes the many ways older adults contribute back to their communities and enjoy an active, high quality of life.  The 2016 theme is: Find Balance at Your Center!

The Lourie Center encourages older adults to remain physically and socially active to remain independent for as long as possible. To honor this mission, the Lourie Center provides services and resources to older adults year-round.  The following events are free (unless noted) and are open to the public.

 

Thursday September 1, 11:30 am -12:30 pm

Senior Center Month Lecture “Wills, Estates, & Probate”   SC Bar Pro Bono Program. This free legal clinic consists of a 30-45 minute lecture by a local attorney, followed by an open question and answer session.

 

Wednesday September 7, 2016 11:30   

Senior Center Month Lecture:  “Food Safety at Home” With Katherine Shavo, MS, RD, LD Food Safety and Nutrition Extension Agent at Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service.  This workshop will focus on using kitchen thermometers to store and prepare foods safely.  Also recommendations on handling raw meats, poultry, and produce to reduce your risk of food borne illness will be demonstrated.  Bring your food thermometers and we will calibrate &/or verify their accuracy.

Lutheran Homes celebrates September Is  Healthy Aging Month with information about healthy aging, healthy snacks, and blood pressure screenings.

“In Our Community… Dementia Speaks”   Workshop Series

In partnership with the Columbia Urban League, this is four-part education series is designed to inform community members about the effects of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.  If you are a caregiver or you provide support for someone living with dementia, this education program is for you.  The education program and continuing education hours are provided at no cost to participants.

Medicare Resource Office

Part questions, part answers, at no cost and open to the public.  A representative will explain the benefits of a Medicare plan.

 

Thursday September 17, 11:30 am -12:30 pm

Senior Center Month Lecture: “Clarity: Your Guide to Medicare Advantage” With Ed Greenleaf, Greenleaf Consulting. You may be enrolled in Medicare or just starting to think about signing up. This workshop will help you understand Medicare and your choices. Learn about Medicare parts A, B, C and D, Medicare supplement insurance and more.

Friday September 16, 1 -4 pm

Shibori Indigo Dye Workshop.  With Caroline Harper, CHI Design Studio

During this 3-hour workshop, you will learn to make and maintain a non-fermented indigo vat and dye cotton to familiarize with the dyeing properties of indigo. We will use three shibori techniques, a Japanese ancient practice and a fourth one more freeform. Cotton napkins will be supplied, just bring your dyer’s clothes and/or apron.  **$50 per person. Preregister.

Senior Center Month Lecture: “How to Manage Your Blood Pressure” With Patti Fabel, PharmD, BCPS, Medicine Mart Pharmacy of West Columbia. We will discuss ways you can manage your blood pressure through lifestyle changes.  We will also discuss a state-wide blood pressure coaching program you may be eligible for.

Senior Center Month Lecture: “Your Kidneys and You” With Ava Dean, BSN, MPH, Program Manager, National Kidney Foundation. Learn why your kidneys are so important what you can do to protect them.
