Lowcountry Affiliate of Susan G. Komen® shares Community Profile and announces funding opportunities

September 6, 2015

CHARLESTON, SC – The Lowcountry Affiliate of Susan G. Komen ® has completed its 2015 Community Profile, an in-depth analysis of service area needs that will guide the work of the Komen Lowcountry Affiliate for the coming years. The data is compiled using statistical information, healthcare provider input and focus groups from across Komen Lowcountry’s 17-county service area.

“This needs assessment is gathered to help the Affiliate and our partners identify breast cancer disparities within our region,” says Lucy Spears, Komen Lowcountry’s Missions Program Manager. “By incorporating focused grant-making, education and advocacy policies, we can make a greater impact on the lives of South Carolinians, and better address the region’s breast care needs.”

Komen Lowcountry is also proud to announce the availability of grant funds for 2016. Grants will be made to support efforts to reduce breast cancer disparities in the affiliate’s 17-county service area. The Community Grants Program focuses on the needs identified by the Community Profile. Applicants must be 501c3 nonprofits or state or federal agencies assisting with reducing the barriers to care in the region’s most vulnerable populations.

“Our grants provide a financial resource for screening, diagnostic, and treatment support programs, as well as education’” says Spears. “Funding depends on the quality of the current application, the quality of the applicant pool, the funds available for distribution and the counties served.”

Organizations applying for grants are required to attend the grant training workshop. The workshop is scheduled for Sept. 17 at the Lowcountry Area Health Education Center in Walterboro. Registration is required.
