Lowcountry Food Bank receives $22,112 donation from Crews Subaru and Subaru of America

September 24, 2020

The Lowcountry Food Bank (LCFB) announced that it received a $22,112 donation from Crews Subaru to help feed Lowcountry neighbors who struggle with hunger. A check presentation was held at the LCFB on August 26. Through the Subaru Love Promise, a commitment to support communities, Subaru and its 630 retailers across the country made a donation to provide 50 million meals to 200 food banks this summer.

“How can you not be moved by the work the Food Bank does every day,” said Crews Subaru owner Robert Crews. “The need is still double what it was before the pandemic – we hope this helps,” he said. “We had to do something, and we will do more,” said Subaru General Manager H.R. Hicks. “We see the need and I see a great partnership being created.”

The $22,122 donation, half from Subaru and half directly from Crews Subaru, has helped create more than 132,000 meals for Lowcountry neighbors who struggle with hunger. The overall food insecurity rate in the 10 coastal counties of South Carolina has increased by 58% since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March. The increase in food insecurity for children is even more devastating at 76%, resulting in a total of 75,000 children who do not have consistent access to the nutritious food they need to live healthy, active lives.

COVID-19 has created a tremendous increase in the demands on the LCFB and its partner agencies. The LCFB continues to meet increased food needs while facing challenges like higher costs of food procurement, tightening of the food supply chain and the need to modify how food is safely distributed to the community.

“We are thankful to Subaru of America and Crews Subaru of Charleston for helping feed our neighbors in this time of great need,” said Brenda Shaw, Chief Development Officer of the LCFB. “We look forward to working with Crews again in the future to ensure that our community has access to the food they need to live healthy lives.”
