Lowcountry Food Bank’s Walk to Fight Hunger aims to raise funds to help food insecure Lowcountry neighbors

The Lowcountry Food Bank is holding a “hybrid” walk event that aims to bring awareness to hunger issues in coastal South Carolina and raise funds for Lowcountry Food Bank programs, including Senior Meals, Childhood Hunger programs, and fresh produce options for the community.
The Lowcountry Food Bank Walk to Fight Hunger, presented by Charles River, will take place on Sunday, September 19 from Noon – 4:00 p.m. at Riverfront Park in North Charleston.
Because of the recent increase in Covid-19 cases, the Walk to Fight Hunger will be a “hybrid” walk event. Donors and friends are encouraged to drop-in to the park and participate in a self-guided walking tour at their own pace and comfort level. Guests will receive an informational packet to accompany their self-guided tour.
In addition, Lowcountry Food Bank will also host a “drive-thru” food drive at the event. Participants are encouraged to bring non-perishable canned proteins, canned fruits and canned vegetables (low-sodium, low-sugar). Canned items can be safely donated from their vehicle. Baby diapers, baby wipes, and adult diapers are also needed.
A variety of corporate sponsorship levels and volunteer opportunities are available. Along with Charles River, Walk to Fight Hunger corporate partners supporting the event include Ashton Woods, ClaimLogiq, Food Lion Feeds, iHeart Media Charleston, Live 5 News, Pivotal Fitness, Publix, and Smithey Ironware Company.
“Conducting a hybrid, virtual event gives us the opportunity to bring greater awareness to food insecurity in a new way,” said Nick Osborne, Lowcountry Food Bank President & CEO. “Including a food drive in the Walk to Fight Hunger event will be the largest-scale food drive we have held since Stamp Out Hunger in May 2019 – the event we have held for many years in partnership with the National Association of Letter Carriers.”
Food insecurity among children in the 10 coastal counties of South Carolina rose 38% between 2019 and 2020 with more than 55,000 children who don’t know where their next meal is coming from. The rise in food insecurity among adults in the 10 coastal counties rose 29% between 2019 and 2020, representing more than 185,000 people who struggle with hunger.
“As we navigate the economic effects of Covid-19, the need is still great to ensure our food-insecure neighbors can live a healthy life,” said Osborne. “We encourage our community to participate in the Walk to Fight Hunger on September 19th and learn even more about hunger issues.”
