Lowcountry high school named Most Outstanding for their service work

May 1, 2017

A Charleston-area high school recently received the prestigious honor of Most Outstanding Students In Action Team from the Jefferson Awards Foundation (JAF).

Charleston County School of the Arts’ Students In Action (SIA) team was named the Jefferson Awards’ Most Outstanding Students In Action Team for the Lowcountry region during a competition held at North Charleston City Hall on April 25. The team was also awarded a 2017 Gold Service Leadership School Award, a banner which will hang in the school all year.

The Jefferson Awards Foundation was founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft, Jr., and Samuel S. Beard as the country’s highest honor for public service and volunteerism. The mission of the Jefferson Awards is to honor Americans who have performed outstanding public service and to inspire others to follow their examples. In line with this mission, the Jefferson Awards Foundation began a youth development initiative in 2006 called Students In Action, which serves as the foundation’s flagship student leadership program and is active in over 400 high schools across the country. More than 40 of those high schools are located here in South Carolina.

Of those 40 high school Students In Action teams, 24 of them competed to win a Jefferson Award this year, and Charleston County School of the Arts was one of five regional winners from around the state.  The other four winners include Greenville Technical Charter High, Spring Hill High School, Swansea High School, and Socastee High School.
