Lower Richland High named state finalist in $2 Million Samsung Contest

December 3, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – Another Richland One school has been named a finalist in the $2 million Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest. Lower Richland High School is now one of the five South Carolina schools to become a state finalist in the competition. W.J. Keenan High School’s selection was announced in November.

The goal of the national competition is to increase student interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) by challenging them to address community needs. Lower Richland students will use their STEM skills and knowledge to analyze speeding and auto collisions in the Lower Richland community, with the hope of influencing school speed zone designations.

“Having the opportunity to use what is taught in the classroom to help find solutions for real problems in their community is truly the basis of a strong STEM education,” said Constantina Green, the school’s STEM coordinator. “The problem-solving, collaboration and critical thinking skills that our students gain through projects such as this will prepare them for college and beyond.”

During the next phase of the competition, Lower Richland students and teachers will submit a lesson plan to address speeding and auto collisions in their community. This is Lower Richland’s first selection as a state finalist in the Samsung contest. Fifty-one state winners will be announced in December.
