Lyn Long recognized for community service, character essay contest

CHAPIN, SC – Mayor Skip Wilson proclaimed Tuesday, November 3 “Lyn Long Day in Chapin” this morning at the monthly meeting of the Chapin Woman’s Club at the Chapin Branch Library in recognition of her longtime service to the Chapin community and her leadership in coordinating the Character Trait of the Month essay contest.

For the past 15 years, Long has coordinated an essay contest with Chapin area elementary, middle and high schools to promote positive traits that lead to character development. The students are recognized with articles in the Chapin Times and displays at the library and on Channel 2, the town’s public access television station.

A retired educator and assistant principal at Chapin Elementary School, Long has been a fixture in the community serving numerous organizations as varied as the Fancy Hat Ladies and Chapin Chirpers to the Chapin Woman’s Club, which honored her in 2006 as Woman of the Year.

“We appreciate all that Lyn has done to expose students to the importance of  community service, respect, honesty, integrity, initiative, responsibility, patience and other important virtues so as to build future leaders for our community and state,” said Chapin Mayor Skip Wilson.

The ceremony included comments by former Mayor Stan Shealy and Gene Long, her husband of 55 years. Her daughter Kathryn Mahoney was also in attendance.
