M. B. Kahn assists to eliminate water shortage for the City of Columbia

October 16, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – Responding to the City of Columbia’s emergency call, M. B. Kahn Construction Co. mobilized to supply the manpower, equipment, and materials needed to maintain the city’s water service during the region’s recent historic flooding event.

Shortly after last week’s canal breach left water levels dangerously below what is required to produce water at the Canal Water Treatment Plant, the city approached M. B. Kahn to help with the emergency water shortage. By Wednesday evening, M. B. Kahn had mobilized more than 20 employees to install the equipment and piping needed to pump approximately 18 million gallons of water per day from the bottom of the canal up to the plant.

Since the city’s Canal Treatment Plant demand exceeds 30 million gallons of water a day, M. B. Kahn was asked to continue working around the clock to install additional pumps and piping from the Plant down to the Broad River, therby increasing the available water supply to almost 40 million gallons a day.

“The City of Columbia and AECOM sincerely appreciate M. B. Kahn and all of your staff that have and continue to work tirelessly to provide water to The City of Columbia”, said V. Craig Metts, PE, Senior Project Manager at AECOM.

M. B. Kahn employees continue to monitor the emergency systems around the clock to ensure everything is running smoothly so the city will have a steady supply of water.

“Our entire community has been impacted and we are grateful to the city for allowing us to assist them in this emergency. Their leadership was a critical component of the team effort required to get the systems in place to provide water to the canal plant,” said Bill Edmonds, Executive Vice President of M. B. Kahn.
