M. B. Kahn helps build first LEED Gold military brig

September 12, 2013

COLUMBIA, SC – September 12, 2013 – M. B. Kahn was part of a design-build team that constructed the regional Marine Corps brig at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, making that installation the military’s first brig to earn LEED Gold certification.

The design-build team, which also featured Enviro AgScience and Moseley Architects, collaborated with the Navy to determine the most appropriate strategies to reduce energy consumption, which included integrating high performance HVAC systems and envelope materials into a design that also met the Navy’s security and impact resistance requirement.

As a result, the MCIEAST Regional Brig at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is modeled to achieve 39 percent energy savings, which exceeds the 30 percent requirement of the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

The project also featured an emphasis on waste recycling during construction and was able to divert 97 percent of all construction debris from landfills.  This reduction greatly exceeded Camp Lejeune’s current recycling goals and supports the attainment of federal mandates.

M. B. Kahn is proud of its record in building and creating environmentally sound projects, said Tim Cullum, executive vice president. To work on a project that created the military’s first LEED Gold certified brig is an amazing honor.
