Mark C. Bruce named Santee RIVERKEEPER®

February 10, 2009

NORTH SANTEE, SC – February 10, 2009 – North Santee, SC – The region between Columbia, Moncks Corner, and Georgetown South Carolina now has a full-time advocate for the local rivers and lakes. Recently, Waterkeeper Alliance, an international environmental advocacy organization, approved the proposal submitted for a Santee Riverkeeper. Mark C. Bruce, the newly appointed Riverkeeper, will work to protect and preserve the water quality.

Waterkeeper Alliance is very pleased to have someone like Mr. Bruce who will be the eyes, ears, and voice for this vital river and lake system. said Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Chairman of the Waterkeeper Alliance.  The theft of our public waters by polluters, said Mr. Kennedy, is not acceptable and I believe Mr. Bruce will be a progressive leader for conservation and water quality preservation in the region.

The Santee Riverkeeper will be a full-time advocate for the best interests of the Santee River, Lake Marion, Lake Moultrie and all of the constituent tributaries that make up these bodies of water, protecting and restoring water quality through community action and enforcement. “Santee Riverkeeper’s objective,” said Bruce, “is to provide strong advocacy that will result in an improved quality of life for all citizens who frequent the lakes and river for recreation, those who live on and around the lakes and river and for those who simply value the lakes and rivers continued well being.  In addition, it is imperative that we collaborate with citizens, other organizations, local, state and federal officials to sustain the best water quality for the future citizens of the State of South Carolina.”

The Santee Riverkeeper will work on watershed-related issues for the Santee River, Lake Marion, and Lake Moultrie.

The leading voice for clean water and watershed protection worldwide, Waterkeeper Alliance is one of the world’s fastest growing environmental movements – with 183 Waterkeeper programs on six continents.
