COLUMBIA, SC – Mark Mayson, M.D., Palmetto Health Baptist physician executive, received Palmetto Health’s Lead by Example Award for 2014. The Lead by Example Award is awarded annually to a Palmetto Health leader who goes above and beyond. Recipients are expected to lead by example, practice strong work ethic and personal accountability, implement new ideas and solutions, and model the Palmetto Health Values and Standards of Behavior.

Mayson, a patient and staff advocate, is a supporter of the Safe Surgery initiative in Palmetto Health Baptist’s operating rooms. He co-chairs the Perioperative Services Committee where he supports other important quality measures, such as Surgical Care Improvement compliance and reducing surgical site infection rates. He has built teams that identify, test and spread best practices across the health system.

In a recommendation for the award, Greg Gattman, Palmetto Health Baptist acute care executive, stated, “He spearheaded efforts in mortality reduction, ventilator-associated pneumonia reduction and Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Service (CMS) perfect care measure compliance, just to name a few. He brought a voice of reason and collegiality to the Medical Executive Committee (MEC) and won support by appealing to the scientific voice of each physician. His support for doing the right thing for our patients has been unwavering.”

Mayson received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Ga. and completed his residency at Memorial Medical Center, Inc. in Savannah, Ga. A physician with Palmetto Health since 1994, Mayson holds several leadership positions within the Palmetto Health system. He serves as medical director of Palmetto Health Baptist’s intensive care unit and respiratory therapy; physician executive of Palmetto Health Baptist; and system vice president of quality for Palmetto Health. He specializes in pulmonary disease at Palmetto Pulmonary Group.
