Joined by his family, Greenville native and local attorney, Matt Johnson, formally filed to run as a Democratic candidate for the City Council District One seat.
Johnson is also committed to focusing on the redistricting process in 2021 based on the 2020 census and the GVL2040 comprehensive plan to ensure it is forward thinking and ambitious to match prior successes like the revitalization of Main Street, Falls Park, etc.
Johnson is a shareholder in the Greenville office of Ogletree Deakins. Since 2004, Johnson has represented employers in all aspects of employment and labor law before state and federal courts and agencies. Before joining Ogletree Deakins, Johnson worked in general litigation and civil litigation. Johnson is the Chair-Elect of the South Carolina Bar’s Employment and Labor Law Section.
Johnson served the public for two full terms on the City of Greenville Planning Commission, including as Chair. In this role, he made recommendations to City Council on zoning and annexation issues, reviewed and approved new subdivisions, and was involved in comprehensive planning to improve the health and welfare of the public. He also served on the City’s Residential Infill Task Force in 2015 – 2016, which analyzed and made recommendations to City Council about infill projects, their impact on existing neighborhoods, and related ordinances.
In addition to his work in the public and private sectors, Johnson has remained dedicated to bettering the Greenville community through volunteer work. For twelve years, he was a committed volunteer at the United Way of Greenville County. Johnson’s interest in public service began with the Greenville Chamber’s Leadership Greenville program. Currently, he is a Steering Committee Member with the Greenville Homeless Alliance.
