May 20, 2026The Mauldin Police Department is reminding the public of safety rules governing use of the Mauldin GateWay Bridge after a sign fell from the structure onto I-385 Sunday afternoon, nearly causing a collision.
Officers responding to the incident also observed a man running across all three lanes of traffic on I-385 to retrieve the sign before crossing back to the other side. The individual was located and issued a verbal warning. No injuries were reported.
“Situations like this are highly dangerous and threaten public safety,” the department stated.
In response to the incident, Mauldin Police outlined the following rules for use of the GateWay Bridge:
- Signs larger than 4 square feet are prohibited on the bridge.
- Smaller signs are permitted but must be held firmly at all times.
- Affixing, leaning, or placing signs in a way that could damage the safety barrier is prohibited.
- Hanging signs over the edge of the bridge is prohibited.
- Crossing the highway on foot is illegal under South Carolina law and is strictly prohibited.
The department thanked the public for its cooperation and urged everyone using the bridge to follow the guidelines to protect the safety of pedestrians, protesters, and motorists traveling on I-385.
