Mayor Nathan Senn of Laurens, South Carolina, has been elected as the President of the Association of South Carolina Mayors (ASCM) during the first board meeting following the resignation of Mayor Stephen Murray in Beaufort in September. His election will bring a fresh perspective and leadership to ASCM, working alongside fellow Mayors from across the state, including Mayor GP McLeer of Fountain Inn. The organization’s

mission to empower mayors across the state to lead their communities effectively, particularly during the period of unprecedented growth and the booming housing construction faced by many South Carolina cities.

The Association of South Carolina Mayors plays a pivotal role in supporting mayors throughout the state. Mayor Senn’s election to this prestigious position comes at a critical juncture for South Carolina’s cities, as they navigate the complexities of preparing for and responding to rapid growth.

Mayor Senn shared his vision for his tenure, saying, “I am honored and excited to take on the role of President of the Association of South Carolina Mayors. My primary focus will be working with my colleagues to amplify the impact of the ASCM and make essential resources available to member mayors. We must equip them with the tools and knowledge they need to guide South Carolina’s cities towards smart growth and effective planning. Our commitment to this mission was reaffirmed by our Board when ASCM approved funding toward an endowment that will enable mayors to participate in the Riley Mayors Design Fellowship—a program close to my heart, as I was a fellow in 2020.”

Mayor Senn continued, “We will work collaboratively to provide a wealth of resources, such as guest speakers, sample planning documents, and other educational materials exclusively for ASCM members. Our aim is to reduce the burden and costs that can sometimes hinder the growth of smaller cities like Laurens.”

Eric Delgado, City Administrator for the City of Laurens, expressed his pride in Mayor Senn’s election to this distinguished position. He commented, “Mayor Senn’s election as President of the ASCM is a testament to theleadership and progress of the City of Laurens. We believe that his vision and commitment will not only benefit our city but will also have a positive impact on the entire state of South Carolina.”
