Housing, Federal Budget Cuts, and Public Safety Among the Priority Issues at Largest Annual Gathering of Mayors

Mayor Daniel J. Rickenmann traveled to Tampa, Florida this week to attend the 93rd Annual Meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM), joining nearly 200 other local leaders to discuss the latest challenges facing American cities, such as housing affordability, tariffs, public safety, federal budget cuts, and infrastructure investment.

At the meeting, Mayor Rickenmann participated in committee meetings and plenary sessions with fellow mayors to exchange best practices and discuss a unified agenda for America’s cities. Mayor Rickenmann participated in two plenary sessions discussing Public-Private Partnerships’ (P3) as a forth multiplier for local capital needs and how to partner to the federal government for critical infrastructure projects. Additionally, he joined colleagues on two small group panel discussions to highlight Columbia’s most recent P3, the BullStreet District, and his advocacy on combating illegal vapes entering local communities.

The mayors also voted on policy resolutions to guide the Conference’s advocacy and inaugurated Oklahoma City (OK) Mayor David Holt as the 83rd President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

“When mayors get in the same room, we learn from each other, plain and simple. I’m proud to share what’s working in Columbia and bring back fresh ideas to keep our city moving forward. I’ll keep showing up to make sure folks across the country know who we are and what we’re building in the Palmetto State’s Capital City,” said Mayor Daniel Rickenmann.

“The U.S. Conference of Mayors Annual Meeting provides a forum for mayors from across the country to come together to share successes, facilitate meaningful change, and tackle the challenges local leaders are facing. In a time where critical local-federal partnerships are strained, this convening will provide a valuable opportunity for collaboration on policy solutions,” said U.S. Conference of Mayors President Columbus (OH) Mayor Andrew Ginther.

Notably, Mayor Rickenmann was elected to serve as one of 13 USCM Trustees to guide and oversee the Conference’s engagement. He rises to this position after serving a full year on the Conference’s Advisory Board and leading for two years as chair of the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Energy Standing Committee, the committee responsible for leading advocacy affecting cities and energy sourcing and reliability, dissemination of best practices, and the transition to clean energy.
