Mayor Steve Benjamin elected as Vice President of the Global Parliament of Mayors

Following a successful stint as President of the United States Conference of Mayors, which concluded in July, Mayor Steve Benjamin has been elected as the Vice President of the Global Parliament of Mayors (GPM). The election occurred On November 11, 2019 during the GPM’s Annual Summit in Durban, South Africa. Mayor Benjamin will serve a one-year term.

The Global Parliament of Mayors is a governance body of mayors from countries around the globe. The founding of the organization was inspired by Dr. Benjamin Barber, author of If Mayors Ruled the World. Today, its members represent more than 33 million citizens worldwide and growing. The vision of the Global Parliament is to create: “A world in which mayors, their cities and networks are equal partners in building global governance for an inclusive and sustainable world.”

 “In today’s age over half of the world’s population lives in cities, so it is vital for mayors across the globe to have the knowledge and support to solve some of our most critical challenges,” said Mayor Steve Benjamin. “I am incredibly grateful to all of my peers that elected me to serve as Vice President, and will work hard to be sure that we collaborate globally to make our world a more prosperous, safe, and just place.
