Mayor Tecklenburg announces renovation plan for Charleston Municipal Golf Course

October 25, 2018

This afternoon, Mayor John Tecklenburg joined members of Charleston City Council and community leaders for a press conference to announce the city’s plans to renovate the Municipal Golf Course for the first time in nearly six decades.

The renovation of the 18-hole course is intended to enhance the quality of playing conditions through extensive drainage projects, reshaped and expanded tee, greens, and fairway surfaces, and a tree management program that will promote the health of the course’s turf. Additional features will be reworked to ensure that the course is maintainable, aesthetically appealing, and playable for golfers of all skill levels.

The renovation plan, created by Golf Course Architect Troy Miller, will be carried out ‘one nine at a time’ in order to maintain the course’s functionality throughout the construction phase.

Miller said, “There are many throughout the Charleston area who care deeply about the Muni and want to see it achieve its full potential.  As a native Charlestonian who grew up playing the course, I’m honored and excited to have the opportunity to contribute to this worthwhile endeavor.”

Mayor Tecklenburg said, “There’s no question that the Muni has long been considered one of our city’s most cherished public spaces, serving as a destination for residents of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels to share and to grow their love for the game of golf. With more than 50,000 rounds played annually, this renovation will help us ensure that the course is played and enjoyed for many years to come.”

The city will use recreation bond proceeds to pay its $1.5 million share of the total renovation cost, with the additional $1 to $1.5 million being raised privately through a fundraising campaign co-chaired by former Kiawah Island developer Leonard Long and current Kiawah Development Company partner Jordan Phillips.

Pending all necessary permitting, construction is anticipated to begin in December 2019.
