McDaniel becomes a member at Callison Tighe

April 7, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – Kathleen McDaniel, an attorney with Callison Tighe since 2007, has become the firm’s newest member.

McDaniel focuses her practice on government and administrative law as well maintaining an active general litigation and appellate practice. She has represented a range of clients, from businesses to governmental entities to private individuals. McDaniel has a unique background, including degrees in wildlife biology and forestry and a two-year stint as a Peace Corps volunteer. She regularly puts these experiences to use for her clients, particularly in her environmental law practice.

As part of her litigation and appellate practices, she and member Rick Detwiler represented the City of Columbia in a case that went before the South Carolina Supreme Court last year. The resulting ruling in favor of the city clearly established that agreements to agree are not binding contracts.

“This was a complex case that involved vast amounts of discovery, numerous oral arguments at the trial level, and two appeals before the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court,” Detwiler said. “Throughout the duration, Kathleen demonstrated impressive skills on a number of fronts. This type of performance is typical, and it is one reason we are proud that she is now a member of Callison Tighe.”

McDaniel has a long history of community involvement in addition to her legal practice. She is a former member of the Richland County Planning Commission and is president-elect of the Rotary Club of the Vista Night. In 2013 she was awarded the Richland County Bar’s Civic Star Award, an honor that goes annually to an attorney with exceptional commitment to service outside the legal profession. In recognition of her contributions to the legal profession and to the community, University of South Carolina School of Law Alumni Association honored her with its Compleat Lawyer Silver Award in 2012.
