McHugh to receive Outstanding Theatre Educator Award

Charles McHugh, drama teacher at Stratford High School, was selected by the South Carolina Theatre Education Association to receive the Outstanding Theatre Educator Award.
“I am honored to be chosen by the South Carolina Theatre Association as the Outstanding Theatre Educator of the Year. I am at my best when I am learning alongside my students, engaging in fresh ideas and pursuing new methods. We are all stumbling around in the dark with flashlights trying to make new discoveries, my experience just means my flashlight casts a wider beam,” said McHugh.
The Outstanding Theatre Educator Award is given to the K-12 theatre educator, college or university professor, or teaching artist judged to have done the most at their respective educational levels for theatre students in South Carolina during the year most recently concluded.
Angela Rogers, drama teacher at Howe Hall AIMS, nominated McHugh for the award.
“Charles not only provides high quality theatre education to students at Stratford High, he also collaborates with local theatres to provide real-world theatre experiences for his students. His students design and build many sets you see onstage in local theatre companies. He also is committed to collaborating with local schools to provide theatre experiences. In addition to these partnerships, he provides professional development for theatre teachers in our district. Because of his commitment to high quality theatre education with an emphasis on community service, I nominated Charles for the South Carolina Theatre Association’s Outstanding Theatre Educator Award,” said Rogers.
