Meta brings national AI accessibility initiative to Columbia, providing free smart glasses to blind veterans
October 15, 2026Meta is bringing its nationwide artificial intelligence accessibility initiative to South Carolina’s Midlands this week, partnering with the American Council of the Blind to provide free Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses and specialized training to legally blind veterans.
The distribution and training event will take place Friday, October 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the South Carolina Commission for the Blind, located at 1430 Confederate Avenue in Columbia.
The initiative is part of Meta’s national commitment to equip more than 130,000 legally blind American veterans with AI-powered smart glasses, expanding access to emerging technology that supports greater independence and accessibility.
Through the partnership, participating veterans will receive Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses at no cost, along with individualized instruction on incorporating the technology into their daily routines.
The glasses combine artificial intelligence, integrated cameras, and voice-activated assistance to help users accomplish tasks that can otherwise require additional support. Available features include reading printed materials aloud, identifying objects, describing surroundings, and responding to spoken questions.
By providing hands-free access to information, the technology offers new opportunities for individuals with vision loss to manage everyday responsibilities more independently.
A central component of the Columbia event will be hands-on training, ensuring that participating veterans understand how to operate the glasses and utilize their accessibility features effectively.
The American Council of the Blind is among several national organizations working alongside Meta to help connect eligible veterans with the technology and supporting resources.
The initiative also reflects the growing role of artificial intelligence in assistive technology, demonstrating how consumer products can be adapted to address practical accessibility needs.
Rather than relying solely on conventional assistive devices, AI-powered wearables can provide users with real-time information about their environment, creating additional options for navigating daily activities.
For the Midlands, Friday’s event will bring that technology directly to local veterans through a coordinated effort between a major technology company, a national accessibility organization, and a South Carolina state agency.
Meta announced its commitment in June 2026, outlining a nationwide effort to distribute the devices to legally blind veterans and provide accompanying training and technical support.
The Columbia event will offer participating veterans the opportunity to receive their devices, explore their capabilities, and work directly with instructors to better understand how AI-powered assistance can support their daily lives.
