Michelin, Greenville County Schools Bring Back Successful Game Show Fundraiser

July 20, 2011

Local celebrities, students play for school funds, ‘Are You Smarter’ title

GREENVILLE, SC – July 20, 2011 – Building on the success of its first-ever “Are You Smarter Than a Greenville County Schools Fifth Grader?” event last August, Michelin and Greenville County Schools will bring back the successful fundraiser Saturday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m. at the TD Convention Center, formerly the Carolina First Center. The 2010 event drew a crowd of more than 1,200 and raised $175,000 for supplies for all Greenville County Schools. This year’s effort has even bigger goals.

Once again, local celebrities and community leaders will match wits with some of the brightest fifth graders in the county for a night of family fun. Jeremiah Dew (J Dew), director of fun for the Greenville Drive, will again serve as master of ceremonies. Underwritten by Michelin and supported by a variety of local businesses, 100 percent of all funds raised will go directly to the public schools.

“We greatly appreciate Michelin North America and other Upstate businesses once again partnering with our schools to support the education of our students,” said District Superintendent Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher. “Their commitment provides the visible benefit of needed funding for our schools and also makes a strong statement about the importance of public schools and their impact on the quality of life in the Upstate.”

“When it comes to the needs of our kids and their education, the business community in Greenville and the Upstate have always answered the call and supported our schools,” said Dick Wilkerson, chairman and president of Michelin North America. “Once again, our kids need us to step up and make a difference in the quality of public education in Greenville County through initiatives like this one. If last year’s event was any indication, ‘Are You Smarter’ will be not only a great chance to raise money for schools, it will be a fun and engaging time for our families.”

Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.HelpSmartKids.com. Tickets are $7 in advance, $10 at the door while supplies last. Admission includes a hot dog supper and an evening of entertainment that is fun for the whole family. Doors open for dinner and games at 5:00 p.m. The contest begins at 7 p.m.
